By 2050 the worlds population will reach an estimated 9.1 billion, 34 percent higher than today, with the vast majority of this population increase occurring in developing countries. In order to feed this additional 2.3 billion people, food production must increase by 70%.One approach towards achieving this goal is to reduce the levels of crop loss as a result of insect feeding, which may cause both direct damage and indirect effects through the vectoring of plant diseases.
