Estradiol (E2)-induced growth stimulation of hormone-dependent breast cancer cells is associated with a down regulation of ERα, suggesting that cell proliferation involves an elimination of thereceptor, or at least a decrease of its hormone binding capacity. To assess the validity of this concept, mechanisms underlying the regulation of ERα level were studied, with a special emphasis on the effect of ligands. The MCF-7 breast cancer cell line was selected to conduct our investigations.
