Pregnancy is characterized by endocrinologic and metabolic changes to ensure energy and nutrient supply to the fetus.Placental diabetogenic hormones cause insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia that predisposes diabetes development in pregnancy.Abnormal glucose tolerance first recognized in pregnancy is defined as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).The significance of gestational diabetes in pregnancy is due to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including preeclampsia, birth trauma, macrosomia, polyhidroamnios, and operative delivery. The diagnosis and appropriate treatment of GDM can decrease maternal and fetal complications.
