Foxtail millet(Setaria italica)and its wild ancestor green foxtail(S.viridis)are well known for their drought resistance ability that adapted to the arid and semi-arid dry-land agriculture for the long history.Foxtail millet seeds were found requiring only 26% of their seed weight in moisture for successful germination and its water use efficiency is also higher than other grain crops(Gu et al.,1987).Because of its small genome size(490 Mb),short generation time(50-90 days),self-pollination,prolific per plant seed production,small morphological stature suitable for lab management,foxtail millet could serve as a specific model for abiotic study in the grasses,which include most cereals such maize,rice,wheat,maize,sorghum and many kinds of millets.
