Purpose Viral infection of the cornea can result in inflammation and scarring and eventually lead to blindness.Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly(l:C)], an analog of viral double-stranded RNA, induces the synthesis of various cytokines and chemokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP1), as well as the surface expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) andvascular endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in corneal fibroblasts. The effects of tranilast on the expression of these proteins in human corneal fibroblasts were examined.
