Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as the USAs Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are used extensively throughout the globe for many applications such as,navigation,surveying,structural monitoring,precision agriculture and many more.These positioning systems have become a huge part of the world we live in and contribute greatly to advances in technology.Further applications are restricted by reliability issues in certain scenarios where high precision and confidence are required.The Ionosphere,and in particular a phenomenon known as “scintillation” can cause degradation of the signals from the GNSS satellites causing the quality of the position to also be degraded.In extreme circumstances loss of lock on GNSS satellites can occur that can lead to the absence of a position fix.This poses a major threat to applications that rely on GNSS to provide accurate and reliable position.This paper investigates the usefulness of off the shelf GNSS receivers and free analysis software such as TEQC,which routinely produce quality control parameters for GNSS data,to assess the effects of ionospheric errors on GNSS signals and on positions calculated from GNSS.It is shown that there is some correlation between ionospheric events and these quality control parameters.
