Understanding the importance of "learning to argue" and "arguing to learn",we designed AppleTree,an assessment-oriented collaborative argumentation system to evaluate and empower the development of argumentation skills, collaboration skills and content knowledge in secondary school students. The most striking feature of AppleTree is the embedment of on-going,automated and multi-dimensional formative assessments for learning that can be realized in authentic classrooms.Informed and improved on existing collaborative learning systems, the development and deployment of AppleTree can contribute to our knowledge on assessment practices of collaborative learning.
