Study on Valence Change of Ions in Some Multiferroic Materials

  As well known that the changeable valence of transition metal ions often appear for the oxygen loss during the high temperature process and the non-equivalent doping in materials.And the changeable valence of transition metal ions has great effects on the dielectric,ferroelectric,magnetic,magnetodielectric (MD) and magnetoelectric (ME) properties.To explore the origin of these effects,the Re3Fe5O12 (Re=Lu,Yb,Ho),RMnO3 (R=Y,Tb) ceramics,Bi5FeTi3O15,BiFeO3 thin films were successfully prepared by solid-state reaction,sol-gel,and chemical solution deposition method respectively and the content of changeable valence of transition metal ions was monitored by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).The dielectric relaxation,magnetic relaxation,spin glass behaviour,MD effect,ME coupling were observed in some multiferroic materials and found that the phenomenon mentioned above are related with the valence change of transition metal ions.Furthermore,an annealing in oxygen atmosphere and non-equivalent doping for the samples were used to confirm the origin of valance change effect.Those results are useful for the study and seeking of new multiferroic materials.
