A numerical method is developed to solve fluid-particle interaction problems. The method uses an artificial compressibility method to compute the incompressible viscous flows and further to simulate fluid-particle interaction problems with the immersed boundary method. The immersed boundary method introduces an immersed boundary force density to capture the particle motion. In fluid-particles interaction problems, the total force on a particle includes the external forces, such as the gravity fbrce, the internally developed forces, such as the collision forces between particles, and the drag/lift forces in the fluid-particles interaction motion. The drag/lift forces are obtained by the immersed boundary method. Two test cases, flow past a circular cylinder, and sedimentation of two circular particles in a viscous fluid, are investigated by the proposed method.
