The goal of hospital based healthcare is to assure that each patient receives the correct diagnosis and the proper treatment at the lowest possible cost.In addition, patients should not be harmed through mistakes, errors, or other unsafe conditions such as contracting hospital based infections.Even in wealthy countries with advanced medical training and sophisticated hospitals, the quality of care re mains very uneven.In the United States, for example, patients come from all over the world to a select few hospi tals for what may be the best possible healthcare available anywhere.On the other hand, studies by the Rand Cor poration have shown that in assessing the quality of diagnosis and treatment for common conditions in ten different communities in the United States, patients received the correct treatment only about 54 percent of the time.Thus, even in highly developed healthcare systems, quality is highly variable.Reducing variability will improve the quali ty and reliability of any healthcare system and should be an important focus of healthcare administrators.
