Purpose: It is generally thought that many of suicidal patients have fallen ill with depression. However, the correlation among distress, depression, depressive mood, and suicide attempts keeps unclear. Therefore, we investigated the suicidal patients who entered to the emergency care unit in the Tsukuba Medical Centre hospital, Japan. Methods: 238 patients attempting suicide had been hospitalized from April, 2009 to August, 2010.Among them, 208 patients to whom the psychiatrist participated in the treatment were applicable for this study. After they became conscious, we conducted a semi-structured interview with the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD).Thereafter, the HAMD score was compared among the items as follows; a) motives and reasons for the attempt, b) attempt methods, and c) the psychiatric diagnosis (ICD-10).Comparisons of the HAMD score were performed by Students T test. The association between the items (a-c) of patients and the HAMD score were also evaluated by using Hayashis quantification methods I.P value of less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant..Results: The ratio of male to female was 7∶3 and the mean age was 53 years old.Taking poisons such as psychotropics, pesticides, was most frequently used as an attempt method (accounted for 80 %).(1) The most frequent diagnosis (ICD-10) was F3 and F4, of which ratios were 30% for each, and the following was F2, F6, and F1.Although the HAMD score was high in order of F3>F2>F4>F6, there was no significant difference in the score according to the diagnosis.(2) Items of "motives of suicide attempts", "age", "attempt method", and "diagnosis" affected the HAMD score.Coefficients of partial correlation were 0.75, 0.58, 0.61, and 0.63 for an each item for males. On the other hand, they were 0.60, 0.51, 0.45, and 0.43 for females over the age 40.R2 was 0.60 for males, 0.45 for females over 40, and 0.21 for females under 40.Conclusion: Our results show that severities of depressive state in each suicidal patient are not so different by their diagnosis.Furthermore, in addition to the diagnoses, motives, attempt methods, and characteristics of the patients had also affected depressed states just after suicide attempts. If the depressive state reflects a severity of suicide attempts itself, it would be suggested that depression as well as other profiles, especially motives of suicidal patients, are important in the prevention of future attempts.
