Inactivation of bacteriophage by pulsed electric field(PEF)treatment,which has been known as one of the effective procedure for bacteria nonthermal inactivation,was studied.The treatment chamber consisted with plate-to-plate stainless electrode pair and Plexiglas cylinder,and gap distance between plate-to-plate electrodes was 31 mm.Pulsed voltage was generated by gap discharge method.As the model phage particle,Escherichia coli bacteriophages,M13mp18 and λ phage,were used in this study and both phage were successfully inactivated by PEF treatment.The survival ratios of both bacteriophages decreased depending on the PEF treatment time when applied peak voltage was 5kV or 7kV,and the survival ratios after PEF treatment of 12min were 10-4-10-5.Although the inactivation of M13mpl8 phage was depending on the applied voltage,the inactivation efficiencies of λ phage with the PEF treatment of 5kV and 7kV were the same.
