Before the introduction of Docomomo into China, there have already been significant undertakings completed in recognition of 20 century sites with exceptional heritage values (e.g.New China, 300 Projects by Architectural Society of China).Among these the Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, established by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in 1961, is by far the most influential national device designed to protect heritage site, including some built in the modem era.Based on the authors extensive experience in the designation and conservation practice within the framework of the National Register, this paper provides an in-depth review of the National Register from the aspect of modern heritage conservation in its heritage criteria, identification system and conservation guidelines, with comparisons against the international Docomomo Register and other heritage registers worldwide.Afterwards, questions related to the aims and themes of Docomomo Register of China will be further explored.
