The European Microbicides Project (EMPRO) is a consortium of 35 principal investigators from various institutions and companies in Europe and Africa. It is funded by the European Commission as part of the 6th Framework programme in the area of “Confronting the major communicable diseases linked to poverty".The aims of the project are to develop a pipeline of topical microbicides that block the entry of HIV at mucosal sites, specifically the vagina and rectum. The contribution of the Stellenbosch University group is to study vaginal/rectal permeability characteristics thus aiding identification of promising anti-HIV microbicides. There is also a need to investigate permeability to inactivated virus and leukocytes as well as determining size exclusion using molecular probes.
