In the midst of globalization, there is great concern regarding the quality and safety of foods and agricultural products in P.R.China,in addition to the quantity.Especially in East Asia region it is an extremely important agenda on our food supply. But we do not have enough information and knowledge about the actual conditions of agricultural production and food supply in China.Because the area of land in China is so vast, conditions are highly variable. It is necessary to know the geographical patterns of such conditions in order to have a better understanding of the features of our food supply.Agricultural production in China has increased gradually since the 1960s,especially of fruits, vegetables and animal products where a radical increase has been seen since the 1990s.For example, the rice production has approximately doubled in the last 30 to 40 years, but those of major fruits have more than doubled in only ten years.During this process, there have been changes in the geographical patterns of producing regions such as a rise in the number of newly developed producing regions and the replacement of leading regions over a short time.Inner Mongolia has been replaced Heilongjiang Province in top spot of milk production and Henan Province has caught up with Shandong Province where was the largest vegetable production region in China in these ten years. This is quite a contrast to grain crops and industrial crops where changes in their geographical patterns have been slow.In addition to this, the patterns of the producing regions differ from the geographical pattern of market transactions within China and that of foreign exports from China according to China’s province-wise statistics of domestic market and international trade.Though the major production regions of grain crops are Henan and Shandong Provinces, the largest trading center is Zhejiang Province and the largest export center is Beijing City. The same can be said in vegetables,Shandong and Henan Provinces are the two major production regions in the country, but the two major domestic trade centers are Shandong and Hebei Provinces.More than half of that can be exported from Shandong Province and there are very few from Henan and Hebei Provinces. In the case of meat,Hebei Province in the North,Shandong Province in the Middle,Henan Province in the South and Sichuan Province in the Inland are the four major production regions. However the three major trading centers are Zhejian,Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces where the productions are not big.At last, the largest export center is Heilongjiang Province where the amounts of production and domestic trade are small. With these changes and differences on the geographical patterns I would like to discuss the Chinese and our food systems today.
