High temperature oxidation of Al88Ce8Fe4 amorphous alloy at 630℃ in static air for 15,60,300 and 600 minutes and corrosion behavior were studied. The morphology, microstructure and composition of the oxide films were investigated using SEM,EDS and XRD.The hardness of the oxidized alloys and the electrochemical behavior of the oxide films were measured by micro-indentation and polarization techniques. The results indicate oxidation at 630℃ instigates nucleation, growth and coarsening of Al4Ce,fcc-Al and Ce crystalline phases inside Al88Ce8Fe4 amorphous matrix, thus reducing the hardness of the alloy and growing crystalline oxide compounds Fe2O3,Al2O3 and AlFeO3 on the alloy surface. The corrosion resistance of the oxide films rates in the level of 10-7 A/cm2.The results demonstrate the amorphous Al88Ce8Fe4 alloy is potential new-developed high temperature high strength aluminum alloy for air force and national defense in terms of its high strength, oxidation and corrosion resistance.
