As a new direction of Chinas state-led urbanization process,rural villages in the suburban with small populations,poor infrastructure,and weak economies are being merged into urban community for the need of urban expansion.As a result,thousands of villages have disappeared from the map and thousands of farmers have lost their land.Most landless farmers are resettled in a new residential area and have to adapt to urban lifestyles.The supposed benefits of the merger and resettlement are multifold,including more efficient use of land,better provision of social services,and higher living standards.New challenges are also emerging,such as the impacts associated with the unemployment,the loss of land,cultural and social roots,the changing neighborhood,living environment and lifestyle.Based on 514 household surveys in Xinhuayuan residential area in Changchun,this paper researches on the influence of land expropriation and resettlement on their lives in terms of employment,social networks,jobs,sports activities,transportation,lifestyles etc.This paper also focuses on the satisfaction of landless farmers for the village merger and resettlement program.
