The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has recently issued a regulation (SSMFS 2011:4) which specifies exemption levels of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) and regulates how NORM shall be handled.However final disposal of NORM of activity concentration levels higher that 10 kBq/kg per radionuclide in the decay chain of U-238 0r Th-232 is not included in this regulation.Example of such material is scrap metal with radioactive scale contamination found in metal recycling facilities or uranium filters derived from water treatment facilities.A study is,therefore,started with a view to provide a basis for SSMs judgment of how the final disposal of NORM will be handled in a radiation safe manner in Sweden.Parts that are included in this study are global experience and current guidelines for the management of NORM,description of relevant NORM cases,ownership issue,dilution according to environmental point of view,description of disposal methods and radiological protection criteria and consequently models for predicting the transfer of radionuclides to humans.
