Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects 1% of the population. One strategy to dissect the underlying genetic architecture and neurobiological substrate of schizophrenia is through the use of endophenotypes.Endophenotypes represent distinct genetically mediated traits that reflect directly the biological susceptibility of the disease. They are supposedly simpler and closer to the effects of genes which may make them more useful for gene identification than the clinical signs and symptoms that we associate with schizophrenia. Our work (Owens et al., 2012 Brain; Toulopoulou et al., 2010, 2007 Archives of General Psychiatry) suggest that episodic memory, intelligence and aspects of executive function are robust candidate endophenotypes that share substantial genetic variance with schizophrenia.
