Cardiovascular diseases account for 12 million deaths annually worldwide and myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.Cardiac rupture, ventricular arrhythmia and heart failure are common causes of morbidity and mortality following MI.Cardiac rupture occurs in about 4-10% of all patients admitted with an acute MI, however post-mortem examinations show cardiac ruptures in 31-65% of patients who died of acute MI.Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms that lead to cardiac rupture may aid in the development of new therapies for MI.Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) are a family of 4receptors that belong to the receptor tyrosine kinase superfamily.
