In order to improve the tunnel bend and the downstream flow regime, a measure of cover plate has been adopted in the gate-type spillway tunnel.The improvement effect of the measure is not only related to the flow conditions, such as flow rate, but also to the height of cover plate.The improvement effect of the height of cover plate to the flow regime on the spillway tunnel is discussed by physical model experiments and numerical simulation.The results showed that, the lower the cover plate is set, the depth of the convex bank flow increases and the depth of the concave bank can significantly reduces, flow distribution is more uniform along the cross-section, the downstream flow regime become more stable and smooth, the shear stress of concave wall is significantly reduced and more evenly distributed, the shear stress of convex wall and bottom increase, the flow velocity distribution become more uniform.As the discharge increases, the lower the cover plate is set, the improvement is better.
