We present a general approach for the selective imaging of cancer cells using protein activated near-infrared emitting nanoparticles.Poly(propargyl acrylate) (PA) particles with a diameter of 50 nm were surface modified through the copper-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition of an azide-terminated squaraine dye derivative (az1SQ),a near-infrared emitter, and poly(ethylene glycol) (azPEG) chains.
