PURPOSE:To confirm the feasibility of developed a new swallowing monitoring system based on force sensing resistor(FSR),swallowing was detected.METHODS:The swallowing monitoring system consists of thermoplastic mask,FSR sensor units,a signal transport device,a control PC which is installed an in-house software.The system is designed to monitor pressure change between the thermoplastic mask and larynx and thyroid cartilage region of patient in real time.A signal transport device was used to deliver signals generated by FSR sensor units.The in-house software provides a warning message to the user when there is a possibility of swallowing.A repeatability test was performed to evaluate the reliability of the monitoring system.Counter weights were used to evaluate repeatability of the monitoring system.A volunteer study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the swallowing monitoring system.When volunteers were asked to swallowing,it is confirmed that swallowing is able to be detected.RESULTS:As a result of repeatability test,within 2%reproducibility was confirmed in the same weight.In the volunteer study,the monitoring system could detect swallowing within the thermoplastic mask.When the volunteers are start to swallowing,the system can detect swallowing effectively.Thus,warning message was confirmed.CONCLUSION:The swallowing monitoring system is possible to monitor swallowing in head and neck case.We expect that the monitoring system could prevent dose error which is caused by swallowing.
