A series of composites and hybrids of carbon nanotube and graphene were prepared by in situ polymerization, solution mixing, codeposition, and melt compounding, etc. They were packed in the bores of fused silica capillaries to form microdisc electrodes. The fabricated electrodes were used as the detection electrodes of capillary electrophoresis and microfluidic chips for the rapid determination of the bioactive constituents in pharmaceuticals, disease markers in blood and urine, toxic compounds in cosmetic products, environmental pollutants, nutritions in foods, etc. In comparison with conventional metal and carbon electrodes, the sensitivity and anti-passivation capability of the novel electrodes were significantly improved, indicate great promise for capillary and microchip electrophoresis, flowing injection analysis, and other microfluidic analysis systems. The carbon nanomaterial-based electrodes developed in our group included graphene-copper nanoparticle hybrid electrode, polystyrene microsphere@graphene ball electrode,graphene-nickel nanoparticle hybrid electrode, carbon nanotube-copper nanoparticle hybrid electrode, and a variety of polymer-based composite electrodes of carbon nanotube and graphene.
