Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in maize based feed has caused elevated levels of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk in Western Europe in 201 3.This included the Netherlands, however, the AFM1 level in milk never exceeded the EU legal limit. The elevated AFB1 levels in maize for feed were not detected during routine controls.A plausible cause for this unnoticed contamination might be the heterogeneous distribution of AFB1 in large shipments as shown in previous studies on aflatoxin distribution in large shipments of other commodities.
