The topic of instinct is important to adequately understanding animal mind and behavior,but appears to be somewhat neglected in current philosophy and science.In my paper I wish to discuss aspects of Edmund Husserls philosophy of instincts.For Husserl,an instinct is not an inborn pattern of more or less inflexible and a-rational behavior,but,rather,a kind of inborn drive or impulse that can inform even flexible and complex thought and action.I will take a closer look at the “fulfillment” or satisfaction of instincts,arguing that central aspects of Husserls earlier view of the fulfillment of intentional experiences remain part of his later view of the fulfillment of instincts.
