The mechanical heart-assist devices are designed for the postoperative circulatory support in patients who underwent cardiac surgery or bridge to heart transplantation or treatment of the acute severe heart failure. For children, especially for infants or neonates, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and centrifugal pump are usually preferred for circulation support after cardiac surgery and for use in those who have concomitant respiratory failure. However,ECMO remains quite limited to be used in the intensive care unit, particularly in regard to duration of support.
