Photoactivatable fluorophores switch from a nonemissive to an emissive state upon illumination at an activating wavelength and then emit after irradiation at an exciting wavelength. They are getting more and more attentions along with the development of single molecular technique.Besides fluorescein and rhodamine,BODIPY is another ideal photoactivated scaffold due to its high stability, high absorption efficiency and quantum yield.Unfortunately, with few exceptions a serious limitation of most photoactivatable BODIPY is that they absorb light mostly in the ultraviolet where the limited penetration of UV light into tissues largely restricts these studies to fixed cells and thin tissue slices.Furthermore, prolonged exposure of cells or tissues to UV light can lead to cellular damage or death.Visible light absorbing chromophores that offer simple photorelease schemes and structures would potentially make a visible light activated BODIPY for widespread use in biologically oriented laboratories.
