The presentation provides insight into the revision process of the Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards (BSS).It introduces the main features and structure of the revised document which is closely linked to the 2007 Recommendations of the ICRP.The BSS is based on fundamental safety objectives, safety principles and concepts set out in the IAEA Safety Fundamental Principles (SF-1)-the fundamental IAEA radiation protection and safety publication, which provides the basis for the IAEAs safety standards (including the BSS) and for the IAEA safety related programme. The main aim of the SF-1, as well the BSS, is to provide for the establishment of a harmonized and worldwide acceptable system for protection of people and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation.Furthermore, the presentation also describes the importance of the role of the cosponsoring organizations (FAO, IAEA, ILO, NEA, PAHO, WHO, EC and UNEP) in the revision process and in the implementation of the BSS, and mentions important and legal aspects of introducing the BSS into national regulatory frameworks.
