In their soil environment Streptomycetes have to cope with permanent nutrient limitation;especially nitrogen is one of the limiting factors in soil.We are investigating the regulation network of nitrogen assimilation and metabolism in the model organism Streptomyces coelicolor.Glutamine synthetases are key enzymes of nitrogen metabolism. They are responsible for nitrogen assimilation from ammonia into glutamine under low-nitrogen conditions. In contrast to most other bacteria S.coelicolor contains two different catalytically active glutamine synthetases:the prokaryotic-type GSI (encoded by glnA) and the eukaryotic-type GSⅡ (encoded by glnⅡ) [1].
