Objective:A retrospective cohort study was conducted to search evidence for clinical benefits of mediastinum-transposed omentum on postoperative short-term outcomes for patients undergoing open Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy. Methods:A total of 154 consecutive patients, who were diagnosed with esophageal cancer or esophagogastric junction(EGJ) cancer and treated with curative Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy via open approach at The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from January 2010 to July 2014,were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent a thorough examination prior to surgery. An endoscopic biopsy was conducted for pathology that confirmed malignancy.Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography(PET-CT) was performed on patients who were suspected of distant metastasis.Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was prescribed for selective patients with large sized tumor to confer operability for radical resection.Pathologic staging was determined according to 7th edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual for esophagus and esophagogastric junction cancers.
