Tapiscia sinensis(Tapisciaceae)has been proved to be a functional androdioecious species with both male and hermaphroditic individuals,and male pollen vitality was far higher than that of hermaphrodites.To better understand the causes of the decreased pollen vitality in hermaphroditic flowers,the different stages of anther development were observed,and we found that hermaphroditic flowers exhibited an abnormal tapetum and dysfunctional pollen wall,resulting in low pollen viability.A putative bHLH transcription factor,Tapiscia sinensis DYSFUNCTIONAL TAPETUM1(TsDYT1),was analysed and cloned.The results of quantitative real-time PCR(qRT-PCR)showed that TsDYT1 was significantly downregulated in hermaphroditic flowers of T.sinensis compared with males at the tetrad(Tds)and young microspore(YM)stages,which was confirmed by in situ hybridization.
