In this study, a novel method for the preparation of polymer and clay nanocomposites is illustrated. The nanosilica is employed as a spacer intercalated into clay gallery to improve the exfoliation of clay in polymer matrix. The nano silica with a diameter between 8-25 nm is mounted on clay surface by solution mixing method. The silane derivatives such as aminosilane or other cationic silane are chosen to modify the clay together with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) via condensation reactions.Field emission SEM (FESEM), TEM, and XRD are employed to investigate the structure of clay-silica nanohybrids. Results shows the nanosilica has been formed on clay with a diameter grater than 8 nm and exhibits the featureless diffraction curve as inspected by WAXD.Both nonpolar polyolefin and polar polyamide were employed for the preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposites. These nanocomposites show the highly exfoliated structure for clay dispersion due to the nanosilica adhered on clay surface, acting as an efficient spacer for clay exfoliation.
