Introduction About one million of Tajikistans population has no access to the normal energy supply. In addition,70% of the population lives in rural areas and suffer most from lack of electricity. This situation causes the local rural population to seek alternative sources of energy, including wood fuel, often mined by cutting of high mountain forests to meet energy needs.Felling of forests leads to loss of biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and degrades the environment, causing erosion and, thus, increasing the risk of natural disasters. In this regard, the study was conducted in 2010 - 2011 to assess the level of use of wood as a fuel rural households, the need for other forms of energy and the development of strategic actions to reduce the pressure exerted on the forest (felling of trees and shrubs) through energy efficiency and alternative energy sources in the four jamoats located in protected natural Areas (Pas) of the Republic of Tajikistan. The target groups were typical of rural households.
