Metastasis is a multistage process that requires tumor cells to escape from the primary tumor, survive in the circulation, seed and grow at distant sites, Since the molecular pathogenesis of metastasis is not well understood, there is no effective treatment for cancer metastasis.Recent advances in functional genomics, including proteomics and microarray analyses of primary and metastatic tumors, have unearthed several genes and genetic pathways that are associated with metastasis, such as the stem cell-like properties of metastatic tumor cells, but their critical roles in the pathogenesis of metastasis are poorly defined.
