Suicide and suicide prevention are seldom considered human rights issues and rarely, if ever, explicitly addressed in international human rights standards or legislation, despite the contribution (as with health and mental health) of sociocultural factors.Public and helping professionals education about both suicide prevention and human rights is limited. This symposium aims to address this neglect by discussing suicide and suicide prevention in a human and women rights perspective.Three oral presentations will be included in the symposium, which will provide evidence for the urgent need to recognize the human/women rights issues involved in suicide and suicide prevention. At the end of this presentation, the discussion will be open to the floor where the audience will be invited to contribute their knowledge on this topic and suggestions for research and prevention strategies developed within a human/womens rights framework.
