The environmental pollution problem resulted from e-waste dismantling process has become a global concern.A pilot-scale biotrickling filter(BTF) was designed to treat the organic waste gas emitted from a typical e-waste dismantling workshop.Measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the main components of organic waste gas were 1-hexene, benzene, toluene, chloro-benzene, ethyl-benzene, xylene, styrene, alpha pinene, benzaldehyde, and trimethyl-benzene.The removal efficiencies of these VOCs components ranged from 81.06% to 97.82%, the total removal efficiency of BTF achieved 94.48% after 90 days operation.At steady running state, the removal efficiencies of BTF for total VOCs increased from 85.65% to 95.49% while flow rate of gases decreased from 500m3/h to 100m3/h.The maximum VOCs elimination capacity of 25.94 g/m3 h wasobtained at the inlet loading of 30.72 g/m3 h.The microbial community analysis revealed that clear distinctionwas observed among the samples from different operation periodof the BTF and most of the dominant microbes in the biofilms were closely related to the initial inoculum, which could degrade effectively toluene, xylene and styrene.All above results indicates that the organic waste gases with multicomponent and fluctuant concentrations from typical e waste dismantling workshops could be removed efficiently bybiofiltration method.
