Sugarcane stem borer, Chilo venosatus Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a significant sugarcane pest in South China.Studies were conducted to evaluate the chemical control, biological control and compound control of sugarcane stem borers and their infestation under natural conditions.Metarhizium anisopliae isolated from the cadavers of Chilo venosatus Walker is a potential bio-control agent against this pest in South China.The results revealed that sugarcane stem borer infestation varied significantly (p=0.01) under chemical, biological,compound and natural environmental conditions.Yield analysis showed significant (p=0.01) yield increase under compound control and chemical control, but in chemical control trials,Lorsban 40 EC was used in recommended doses;in compound control trials, Lorsban 40 EC was only used in sublethal doses by contrast.Adult population of sugarcane stem borer analysis showed significant (p=0.01) reductions in adult population were caused and could keep a long time under compound control and bio-control.All these results emphasized the need to carefully integrate the chemical and biological control tactics of IPM for sugarcane stem borers to get maximum sugarcane yield.
