Recent studies have identified two new forms of NAFLD, which are characterized by NAFLD but not hepatic insulin resistance. These includePNPLA3 NAFLDwhich is caused by the I148M variant in PNPLA3, andTM6SF2 NAFLD, which is caused by the E167K variant in TM6SF2.These subtypes of NAFLD provide human models, which can be used to determine why fat accumulation in the liver does not invariably lead to hepatic insulin resistance as it does inCommon NAFLD.Effects of these subtypes compared to Common NAFLD on serum and human liver lipidome and hepatic and adipose tissue insulin sensitivity is discussed.
