  Carbohydrates(glycans)dictate a huge range of signaling and recognition processes in our bodies,ranging from fertilization,tumor metastasis and blood groups.Glycans generally have low affinity for their binding partners(lectins)requiring multivalent presentation on cell surfaces to enhance affinity via the cluster glycoside effect.This provides a source of inspiration for polymers chemists,to reproduce this multivalent presentation.However,a significant challenge arises from the low specificity of individual glycans – any one-carbohydrate can bind many,many proteins,meaning strategies to overcome this are needed.There is also a need to reproduce the function of glycoproteins,which are challenging to chemically synthesise,and difficult to express in recombinant systems.
