Fulminant Hep-atic Faifure (FHF) should be differentiated from Acute on chronic (A-on-c). The difference between the two is that the former occurs in patients with non-liver disease, while the latter is acute liver failure that occurs on the basis of the original liver disease. A total of 92 A-on-c cases were reported in 16 hospitals in Japan at the 10th Acute On Liver Failure Treatment Symposium in 1984, and another 89 reported by 12 hospitals at the 21st Japan Liver Society in 1987. 55 cases of acute liver failure were diagnosed and treated in our hospital from 1983 to 1986, of which FHF was found in 6 of 17 cases and A-on-c in 11 cases. This article on the two groups of patients etiology, clinical and pathological performance were compared.
