Following the evolution of light sources since years, from halogen bulbs, to Xenon and now LED, this question may be truly valid. The target of this paper is to bring some answers on this point. At first the main characteristics of this king of source, its benefits and constraints will be described, before presentation of some applications. These applications start first with really new design proposals, thanks to the source, which could directly impact the outer shape of the vehicles, as we saw in the past with the development of clear (i.e.without optic) outer lenses for halogen and xenon bulbs.More specifically, these designs with 10 mm height optical system, allow very thin front shape, which will also have a direct positive impact on vehicle aerodynamics in order to reduce CO2 emission.Of course, new design proposals must come without any compromise on performances vs.current high range systems; low height design with high performances low beam and high beam is the first application described in this paper.Using laser diodes to really increase performances of existing designs is a second application. If many low beams can be considered as having very good performances and remaining in line with regulation, the question is raised for high beam.Due to general design, maximum illuminations of high beam are generally between 100 and 150 1x, while regulation allows twice as much.High luminance of laser source will then make it possible to reach performances close to allowed limit, while maintaining compact design.Example of laser spot module is presented in the paper, as well as possibilities for integration and real benefits on beam pattern. Before the conclusion, the last part of the paper shows new functionalities of front lighting which will be possible thanks to laser source and projection systems.Among these new functionalities, there are high resolution Glare Free High Beam, marking light, road marking,...
