"Sound-proof models" are the atmospheric analogue of the classical incompressible flow equations.Their mathematical justification is non-trivial because they result from the full compressible flow equations by elimination of only one of three asymptotically separated scales. As a consequence, the sound-proof equations still constitute an asymptotic two-scale system rather than a limit system that is free of the singular parameter.I will report on recent efforts towards a rigorous justification that circumvents these issues.
