LEDs are today a state of the art technology for automotive headlamps.Devices deliver the required 1000 Im for ECE low beams and deliver luminance in the range of 80 Mcd/m2.Novel prototypes of white high current LEDs of 600 Im/mm2 and a peak luminance of 224 Mcd/m2 are used to built a headlamp acc.ECE R112.An innovative thermally optimized package technology enables operating current densities of 3 A/mm2.The low beam reflector of only 30 mm x 50 mm uses a single chip LED delivering of more than 1100 Im in the hot stabilized status at 6 Amperes.A 3 Chip SMT multi chip LED for the high beam is supported by a high current LED spot to get to the legal limits of 215 kcd.Discrete electronics allows to switch and PWM dim the individual light functions.
