　　There are several serious environment problems in the Loess Plateau area of Northwest China,including soil erosion, desertification, water shortage, drought and flash flood.All the problems are related or attributed to the low forest/vegetation coverage.Many studies carried out in the loess area since several decades have revealed the mechanism of vegetation cover and afforestation in protecting soil, and showed the benefits of vegetation in reducing soil erosion and surface flow.
