Phosphoglycerol mutase (PGAM) is an enzyme that converts 3-phosphoglycerate to 2-phosphoglycerate of the metabolic pathway. The forward reaction occurs during glycolysis. The reverse reaction occurs during gluconeogenesis.Mutation in any of the enzymes in this pathway may result in muscular dystrophy.Several human diseases in metabolic diseases of muscle are directly or indirectly related to glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway, such as phosphoglycerate Kinase deficiency and phosphoglycerate mutase deficiency.
