Oil spills in urban areas affect air, water, and soil and their local terrestrial and aquatic species (Li and McAteer 2000).Great Lakes contain about 20# world fresh water and support the livelihood of more than 30 million of Canadian and American. There are 16 Areas of Concern on the Canadian side of Great Lakes in which three levels of Canadian government have spent effort to restore degraded water quality.Recognizing the Toronto Area of Concern's water quality restoration targets and priorities (e.g.spill control), Canada's Great Lakes Sustainability Fund (GLSF), the City of Toronto, and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's Spills Action Centre (SAC) sponsored a study to design an oil spill control system to protect the proposed wetland ecosystem at the Humber Creek of the City of Toronto. This extended abstract describes the design of the oil spill control system and a physical model study of the associated performance.
