Though widely employed, cross-coupling reactions, broadly defined, often suffer from incompatibilities with alkyl building blocks that contain β-hydrogen atoms, with which β-hydrogen elimination is usually a kinetically more accessible process.The hydrido complexes thus produced, on the other hand, are generally more thermodynamically stable than their corresponding metal-alkyl precursors, in turn giving unwanted hydrodehalogenated instead of the desired cross-coupled products.
