The refractories to be used as the blast furnace trough are required to have the characteristics of corrosion resistance against molten slag with high thermal conductivity to avoid spalling.To satisfy the above requirements,SiC is usually incorporated into the alumina based refractories.However,since the operating temperature of the furnace has tended to increase recently,a deterioration of the trough materials due to increased oxidation of the SiC is resulting in the lowering of the spalling resistance.In order to recover the lowering,a new technique to apply the pitch-coated alumina aggregates was successfully demonstrated.
