Impact of autumn Arctic sea ice on the East Asia winter climate

  The associations between autumn Arctic sea ice and East Asia winter climate have been investigated for three sub-periods during 1979-2013 that are classified using the regime shift method.During the period with rapid decline of and low sea ice extent (2007-2012), the atmospheric circulation shows an enhanced Siberian high, strengthened East Asia trough, and amplified anticyclone activities at north Siberia.This results in the cold anomalies in central and East Asia.Associated with the Arctic amplification (mainly confined to the 700-hPa), the zonal wind decreases in mid-latitudes (40-60°N) according to the thermal wind balance.This is linked to the slow-down and equatorward shift of jet stream and the intensified of wave amplitude.
